VERTEC™ Nova 100, VERTEC™ Nova 110, VERTEC™ Nova 130,VERTEC™ Nova 150 and VERTEC™ Nova 160 are adhesion promotersfor solvent based inks. These Products are commercially available from the new VERTEC™ NOVA Adhesion Promoter range from Johnson Matthey.
These new additives have been developed to improve the balance between stability in the liquid ink and reactivity on printing to deliver improved processing, improved performance, and improved viscosity stability.

These new VERTEC™ products do not contain acetylacetone or phosphate esters, and have been designed to replace VERTEC™ IA10, PI2 and TAA as adhesion promoters. Here we report comparative results for the new VERTEC™ products and current adhesion promoters.

Ink drawdowns
For adhesion and odour tests drawdowns were made on Propafilm RGP30 OPP film from Innovia Films, using a No 2 K-bar. For colour and gloss measurements ink drawdowns were made on 50 micron Melinex 454 Polyester film from DuPont Teijin Films. Except for adhesion tests, films were dried by making 2 passes over a silica tube thermostatted at 60o C. Development of adhesion with time was measured at room temperature.

Adhesion
Adhesion for the NC/PU ink to Propafilm RGP30 was measured using 2% and 4% addition of VERTEC™ PI2, VERTEC™ Nova 110, VERTEC™ Nova 130, VERTEC™ Nova 100, VERTEC™ Nova 150 and VERTEC™ Nova 160. Drawdowns were made at room temperature, without drying over the heated silica tube. Adhesion was measured after time intervals of up to 60 minutes. The results are presented in the table below:

The Control ink with no adhesion promoter gave 40% adhesion after 60 minutes at room temperature.
VERTEC™ Nova 100, Nova 150 and Nova 160 gave the highest, fastest adhesion of the additives tested. Using 2% addition adhesion reached 95-98% within 1 minute of making the drawdown. At 4% addition 100% adhesion was achieved within 1 minute with VERTEC™ Nova 150 and Nova 160.
Increasing the addition level of VERTEC™ Nova 110 and VERTEC™ Nova 130 created improved adhesion performance compared to VERTEC™ PI2:-
  • 1) For VERTEC™ PI2 adhesion reached 98% after 15 minutes, initial adhesion development was faster for 4% addition than 2% addition.
  • 2) For VERTEC™ Nova 110 at 2% addition adhesion reached 98% after 60 minutes, increasing the addition level to 4% gave 98% adhesion after 5 minutes - faster than the result for 4% VERTEC™ PI2.
  • 3) VERTEC™ Nova 130 developed adhesion more slowly than VERTEC™ Nova 110 but, when added at 4%, did reach 98% adhesion as quickly as VERTEC™ PI2 (15 minutes).

These results demonstrate that the new, acetylacetone-free VERTEC™ adhesion promoters match or exceed the performance of VERTEC™ PI2.

Odour test
VERTEC™ Nova 110 is used in the following test as a typical example of all the products within the VERTEC™ Nova range.

Using the NC/PU ink formulation detailed above, drawdowns for the Control, with no adhesion promoter, and inks containing 3% VERTEC™ PI2, VERTEC™ IA10 and VERTEC™ Nova 110 were made. Samples of printed film were then stored in sealed glass jars for 48 hours at 40℃.
The odours of the printed films were assessed by a panel of 5 people on a scale of 1 to 4 (ranging from no perceptible odour to very strong odour).
The results, which are shown in the graph below, conform that VERTEC™ Nova 110 does not impart any odour to the printed ink:

Colour measurements
VERTEC™ Nova 110 is used in the following test as a typical example of all the products within the VERTEC™ NOVA range.

Drawdowns for the Control and inks containing 3% VERTEC™ PI2, VERTEC™ IA10 and VERTEC™ Nova 110 were prepared as described above. Gardner CIELAB measurements were made using a BYK Gardner “color view”.
The results confirm that VERTEC™ Nova 110 gives reduced yellowing compared with VERTECTM PI2.

Gloss measurements
VERTEC™ Nova 110 is used in the following test as a typical example of all the products within the VERTEC™ NOVA range.

Gloss measurements were made using a Sheen Instruments TRIMICROGLOSS. Measurements were made over a white tile.
The 60o gloss values for the Control ink with no adhesion promoter and ink containing 3% VERTEC™ Nova 110 were measured. The results confirmed that the gloss level was not adversely affected by addition of VERTEC™ Nova 110.

Conclusions
VERTEC™ Nova 100, VERTEC™ Nova 110, VERTEC™ Nova 130, VERTEC™ Nova 150 and VERTEC™ Nova 160 are new ink adhesion promoters from Johnson Matthey Catalysts from the VERTEC™ NOVA range, offering the following features and benefits:
  • High performance products that do not have the problems of odour and yellowing associated with acetylacetone based additives.
  • Optimised balance between stability in the liquid ink and reactivity on printing delivers improved processing and improved viscosity stability.
  • As replacements for both VERTEC™ IA10 and VERTEC™ PI2, the new VERTEC™ adhesion promoters allow raw material consolidation.
  • Improved performance enables higher print speeds with low odour, low colour inks.
  • VERTEC™ Nova 110 and VERTEC™ Nova 130 have been formulated to replace VERTEC™ PI2 and VERTEC™ IA10 at the same addition level when these additives are used at approximately 3-4%. Slightly higher addition levels may be required depending on the ink formulation. In the NC/PU ink used in our tests (details given above) VERTEC™ Nova 100, VERTEC™ Nova 150 and VERTEC™ Nova 160 have been found to match the performance VERTEC™ PI2 at the same addition level.
